Louis, Tomas, Russell, et al.: Fixed the issue. The reason is that this motherboard does not find the eth0 interface, only eth1. So, while I configured eth1 in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf, I did not realize that I needed to make the inet1 daemon aware of the different default interface. Running '/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 eth1_start' made the software happy and I can now access the external world as well as other LAN hosts from the new desktop host.
