I have the entire day free to spend on my new Slackware installation.
Before today I got as far as partitioning the SSD hard drive, and
running setup2hd from slackware64-live-current.iso on a USB stick, and
creating a user besides root. I'm following instructions at
https://docs.slackware.com/slackware:install and already have a couple
of questions. If I understand all this correctly, it's not critical that
these things be done in a specific order, so I can come back and make
adjustments as needed.
Well, that's probably not completely true. I had different results
during the partitioning phase than the example. The example said the
swap partition, the first one to create, would start at 1. In my case it
started at 2048. I don't know what's in the first part of the drive, but
I'm assuming it's not something to worry about. (I post this here so
someone can tell me if it IS something to worry about, and what I should
do about it.)
The next question that has come up is related to multilib. I understand
the reason for 32 bit nd 64 bit libraries. What I don't know is how to
tell if any of the software I use requires 32 bit. I can see on my
Ubuntu MATE 18.04 system that I have /lib32 and /lib64. Is there some
tool I can use to tell me if I have any programs installed that use
/lib32? Or should I just go ahead and follow the instructions at
https://docs.slackware.com/slackware:multilib and not have to think
about it later? Again, I assume it's something I can always do later if
I need it.
One of the instructions said I should edit /etc/inittab and change
id:3:initdefault: to id:4:initdefault: in order to have the system boot
into X by default. I did that, and did a restart. Instead of booting
into X I got a command line asking me to enter a runlevel. I entered 4
and the boot process continued normally. Is there something I missed? I
thought booting into X would go strait to the X login screen.
For now, I'm continuing on with setting things up.
