Thanks for all the suggestions.

At the moment it seems to me that Namecheap is the way to go for me.
They'll register my domain for $8.99 a year and provide me with e-mail
for $9.88 a year, which includes
    POP/IMAP/Webmail
    3 GB email storage
    1 GB file storage
    Anti-spam protection
    OX Drive
    1 mailbox included
And that is all the e-mail I need. I'll simply set it up via POP3 in
Claws Mail, and that is that. This operation will generate maybe half a
dozen e-mails a day, so anything more is unnecessary. Some day I may
wish to have a real website, but I'll address that if and when it
becomes something that I want to do. And if I do, I see that Namecheap
has tools to do that, including staff to do it for me if I want.

And yeah, I have gigabit internet with Centurylink, but learning how to
do all this at home would take hundreds of dollars worth of my time.
Not worth it. :)
