I've just set up an HP Laserjet Pro M148dw on my home network. I can

Still can't scan from any machine, Ubuntu or Slackware (XFCE), but I
did get printing working from Slackware, both laptop and desktop
machines. On each machine, I clicked on Applications > Settings >
Print Settings, told it to look for a network printer. It found my HP
M148dw, and happily installed it. I also printed a test page from each
machine.
I don't recall that you said what software package you are using to
scan. I have a networked (ethernet) Brother all-in-one that I
occasionally use for scanning. I usually use Xsane but I also have
Simple Scan installed. Both work.

I usually use Xsane, too. When I run it or Simple Scan, the each report that they can find no scanner.
