That is a common symptom when a drive begins failing. Is it old enough, or has it seen enough wear & tear for this to be likely? Has it always been like this? Or did it start at some point?
How long is quite a while? 10 seconds? 2 minutes? If it were mine, I would try to swap out the drive and the enclosure to see which one the problem follows.
