Thank for the info.

This is a Dell XPS 9370. What's not working is Thunderbolt isn't detected, so
trying to drive an external monitor doesn't work. The system also does not
appear to sleep properly.

The sleep issue could maybe be lived with. However, an external monitor is more
than just a nice to have.

This system came preinstalled with 16.04 LTS. 18.04 has been installed vanilla.
The EFI has been updated, and now 16.04 does not appear to install at all. The
system fails to complete a boot of the media.

ZDNet says plain vanilla works on it too.

I'm in the same situation. I install specific apps that I need but never a

I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 on multiple Lattitude and XPS laptops
for many years but have always just run stock, never added their repos.
What do their repos offer that vanilla Ubuntu doesn't?
