Russell, That's another new one for me. What nl allows is setting the starting number (among other options) which was needed in my case. The source files were formatted to be inserted in database tables and because the two tables are related each row needed a unique identificaton number (the primary key) that did not conflict with existing numbers, and one file needed a foreign key to reference the primary key of the row in the other table.
