I would recommend Ubuntu over Mint due to ease of updating. Mint distro updates are more of a pain in the ass, in my opinion Ubuntu is easy and it works. It has the Gnome Desktop now, but it looks like Unity. I actually prefer Kubuntu personally. Debian KDE is another option.
