A strange behavior just appeared on the LAN. After setting ssh-add to both desktops after logging in I was able to scp a file from salmo (32-bit) to baetis (64-bit). A while later trying to rsync baetis' /data directory with salmo's data/ directory failed because of a broken pipe/host not found error message. Same result trying to ssh from baetis to salmo. Yet, pinging salmo from baetis works fine.
