NetworkManager is going to hide the details from you. If you want to
learn more about how it works (referring to your "EE lab" remark), the
AdHoc link would be better adapted to that.
That link explicitly states its purpose to be:

Networkmanager was used to establish the "network".
The "network" is now up.
I'm attempting to learn how to use it for *my* goal.
