Sometimes it's not about you, it's about the people talking to you. When you send a message to the mailing list, google will see that message because it will inevitably be sent to someone with a gmail address. As for your curiosity, someone probably never bothered to turn off the mail server. There's an automated phone call still going around that does this old fire&brimstone bible reading. It sounds like it's playing from a record that has seen better days....
