The front of the case connector is connected to motherboard by user. This is usually keyless header to pogo pins on the board. It is conceivable that it is not connected correctly, even to wrong pin header.
It makes sense to check the sound on the fixed audio connectors - back of the case. When that works, open the case and double check the connection to the case audio outputs.
