Another option that I have considered is to upgrade my 4.15 kernel to 5.2 right now, and otherwise stick with 18.04. Is this possible? And if so, is there a 'for dummies' guide somewhere?
John, If Xubuntu has the kernels as pre-built, ready-to-install packages you should be able to do so. On Slackware the current kernel is 4.4.202 but my Ryzen desktop needs 4.18 or higher so I have 4.19.84 installed on it. Here, there are 6 packages for the kernel: kernel-firmware, kernel-generic, kernel-headers, kernel-huge, kernel-modules, and kernel-source. If your repo has these (or an equivalent set of modules) they _should_ be upgadeable on your system.
