If you have basic soldering skills or know anyone who does, monitors are often easily fixed by just replacing bad capacitors. They can usually be identified by a bulging top or leaking. Long ago I had a job repairing monitors. Most monitor parts are very hardy, it is a capacitor most of the time that has failed. Also, many monitors made from 1999-2007 had "capacitor plague" due to problems with Taiwan-made capacitors. It's an interesting tale of a stolen but incorrectly copied recipe for making electrolyte for capacitors.

I have an old Viewsonic that seven years ago stopped working. I replaced all the caps, and still today it is working fine.
