Today I want to learn how to record a video using vokoscreenNG. This
application is up and waiting to record. The video source is an 800x600
window displaying a PDF slide show using impressive presentation software.
The audio will be provided by me using an AudioTechnica AT2005usb microphone.

The mic is turned on and connected to a USB port on the front panel of the
desktop; it apparently needs more juice than the hub can provide.
pavucontrol's configuration tab recognizes the AT2005USB using Analog Stereo
Input as the profile. On the Input devices tab the mic is recognized and
turned on.

For sound monitoring I plugged in the Yamaha headset's phone control on the
desktop's front panel; the mic plug is not connected. My problem is that
pavucontrol shows the device as HD Audio generic analog stereo with the port
as Headphones (unplugged). I cannot find where to turn on the headphones.

pulseaudio-ctl displays the following:
Volume level : 100 %
 Is sink muted : no
 Is source muted : no
 Detected sink : 1
 Detected source : 4

1. How do I turn on the headphones?

2. How can I test the microphone's level without starting the recording?

TIA,

Rich
