I, too, suspect the headset is flawed. The Amazon return period closed last
Sunday so I've sent an e-mail message to Yamaha via their web site asking
for a warranty replacement. I'll keep after them on this as I'm sure they
have a warranty period longer than one month.

Could be the audio ports because the speakers and Audio-Technica mic use USB
connections. However, the headset has the same responsed in both the front
and rear ports.

I doubt it's pulsealsa as speakers, webcam, and AT mic show response to
sound in pavucontrol.
