I'm trying to make a voice recording and audacity is fighting me.

pavucontrol's configuration and input devices display the AT2005USB
microphone.

Long story short: I read the chapter in Carla Schroder's book, checked web
sites, configured audacity. The microphone monitoring bar looked like it was
capturing my words but the saved file was a whopping 525 bytes. Then it told
me it could not open the input device. Closed audacity and reopened it. Now
it does not find the AT2005USB, only a 'default' device. Feh! I've no idea
why it's not working for me.

A web search tells me that ffmpeg can record audio and video as well as play
them. I'm looking for an example command line -- for linux, not windows.
There are many pages found by the search, yet ffmpeg is a large complex tool
(with a long man page). I'm looking for recommendations beyond the man page
that I can use to learn how to use ffmpeg for recording and playback of both
audio and video.

TIA,

Rich
