John, That's interesting. I tried connecting to a conference last week using Google Chrome on slackware-14.2/x86_64. Wouldn't let me log in. Here's the message I received on accessing the conference (bottom sender informatin redacted; alpine shows all the URL tabs for HTML-formatted messages):
