The solution to my sound issue was not obvious. I tried rebooting with minimal hardware connected, and it worked. Then I stared putting stuff back. I got to a USB cable and sound stopped. The cable connects to my Ion turntable. The power was off, but when it's connected to the computer, it blocks sound from going to the analog output. The exception is that if I open the PulseAudio Volume Control I can hear pops as I  drag the volume level slider back and forth.

So, for now I'll leave that turntable disconnected. However, I'd like to understand what's going on so when I do want to record an LP I won't be surprised. Is there some tool that will show me what took over sound when I plugged in that cable?
