Sound does the darndest things.  If speakers aren't working,
I try USB headphones, which recent linux distros autodetect
and enable.  

My guess is that your problem is a configuration file
inadvertently damaged, or PEBKAC, but if it is a broken
chip or wire or connection, an alternate path for sound
to leave your machine is a helpful diagnostic tool.  

When you find out what the problem is, let us know;
I would love to "install" that "problem" on my tinnitus.
