If I am not mistaken, there have been some weird bugs with OBS on Ubuntu that can result in blank screens. My own problems were with capture of the X terminal windows. I read somewhere that it may have to do with the GPU drivers. I can suggest that if you are using Nvidia, to please use the Nvidia official drivers and not the nouveau open source Nvidia driver. Apparently Nvidia never releases their firmware API and the nouveau driver relies on reverse engineering attempts.
