If thunar is the problem replacing it with an alternative that doesn't
distract you would be a worthwhile investment of your time.

There was an update yesterday around 2:45 in the afternoon that required a restart. Since then there haven't been any phantom volumes. I'm assuming something in that update "fixed" the problem. Thanks to all for your ideas on the problem.
