I asked for help a week or so back, in email I've somehow deleted and so
can't just reply to, replacing a comcast modem/router/access-pt device with
something to run openwrt.

And wanted to report I found stuff I'm happy with and can recommend. Got a
Motorola surfboard SB6141 coax->ethernet modem for about $45 from Amazon.
It works perfectly, and to judge by touch uses about 1/10 the power
(Comcast's modem ran HOT!)

In reading I found a lot of good written about GL.iNet's stuff and so tried
a combo router/access pt box called a GL-B1300. Installing stock OpenWRT
was trivial: just used the upgrade feature of the non-stock OpenWRT it
comes with. Its 2.4 and 5 radios seem as powerful throughout my house, and
as fast, and those of the comcast box. The unit itself seems solidly built,
if of plastic. It's a low-end ARM box, but when I use htop to see how it
handles a speedtest from my laptop it's fine: two of four cores run at 50%,
and two are basically idle. It'll handle my needs well.

Thanks!
