Russell, Makes sense. Reading the LVM docs I have here I'm not sure what I have: 4 physical volumns, 1 volume group, or 1-4 logical volumes. I suppose I could use fdisk on each of what's now /dev/sde/ and /dev/sdf/ and reformat them as ext4 then use mdadm to make the two RAID1s. Rich
