Preface:
I have the external hard drives all sorted now: the RAID1 array on
/mnt/backup is making daily incremental backups and the other two HDDs in
the MediaSonic Probox are now a 3.64 TiB logical volume mounted on /mnt/hd
(because that seems appropriate and I've never before used it.) So, I back
to getting sound recorded via my Audio-Technica AT2005USB dynamic microphone
to play through the speakers.
The microphone/pre-amp issue is resolved: I somehow turned down the mic gain
control; turning it back to maximum I see that my voice is captured by
audio-recorder and saved as an .mp3 file. The Scarlett Solo mic gain led
flickers green as I speak. The pavucontrol Input devices tab VU bar also
flickers. And a small test file (120.6 Kb) has content. But, mplayer croaks
when trying to push the sound through the sound card to the speakers:
libavformat version 56.40.101 (internal)

A possibly related experience earlier this afternoon might be relevant. I
had the Yamaha CM500 headset unplugged from the rear of the desktop and no
sound came from the speakers regardless of playing .mp3 using audacious or
from a YouTube video. Using speaker-test, aplay, and Steve Litt's linux
audio troubleshooting tools (shell scripts) and his audio troubleshooting
guide I could not get any sound out. However, plugging in the Yamaha fixed
this issue. I've no idea why because for a long time the Yamaha was not
connected and there were no issues listening to YouTube videos or my music
library using audacious.
What other diagnostic approaches could I use to figure out why .mp3 files
recorded by me won't play.
TIA,
Rich
