Another solution is to just not care about the 5 minutes. Consider it a good time to get a cup of coffee or a banana or have a walk around the neighborhood!
I found the problem and fixed it. Slackware64-15.0 installs with /etc/rc.d/rc.ntpd non-executable (644 perms) and the secondary time server pools in /etc/ntp.conf commented out. Uncommenting server 0.pool.ntp.org iburst server 1.pool.ntp.org iburst server 2.pool.ntp.org iburst server 3.pool.ntp.org iburst in /etc/ntp.conf then making /etc/rc.d/rc.ntpd executable (755 perms) fixed the problem. I hadn't seen this since it's been years since I installed Slackware on a new host, or upgraded it on existing hardware. My thanks to all who offered thoughts and prayers. Rich
