What does /var/log/cups/error_log say? What versions of linux?

But I could not find what filters exist, which one failed, and what to do about it. On the CUPS web page (localhost:631), printer maintenance -> set default options the entire page is in French, but I activated the printer and set the paper size to letter from A4. Still no joy.
