I'm going to be getting a new laptop, which means I'm going to be retiring my Dell. It's a Dell Inspiron 5000 and comes pre-configured and pre-installed with Gentoo. I'm asking in the neighborhood of $300 with all of the accessories.
It's features and accessories are: - 600 MHz Pentium III with 256 K cache (1179.64 bogomips) - 368 MB of RAM - 40.0 GB Hard Drive (this is really big for a used laptop) - DVD/ROM Drive and floppy drive - 15.1 inch SXGA+ Display at 1400 by 1050 resolution (that's incredibly high resolution) - 3Com Ethernet and Prism 802.11b (wireless) PCMCIA cards - serial and parallel ports (you don't get those on new machines) - ATI video card with 8 MB dedicated RAM and enough 2D acceleration to watch DVDs smoothly - VGA, S-Video, and composite output (I haven't done TV-out in Linux but it's supposed to work) - Neoprene sleeve case and leather case - big and comfortable built-in keyboard and nice trackpad - very good support in Linux (e.g. sleeping works) Problems: - No battery (I'm sure you can get a replacement online) - The screen hinge is a little loose (you could probably fix this) Anyway, it's not a brand new machine, but considering the size and resolution of the screen, the size of the hard drive, the amount of memory, and the degree of support in Linux, I think it's a pretty good deal. So, if any of you are interested, email me off-list. -- Andrew McNabb http://www.mcnabbs.org/andrew/ PGP Fingerprint: 8A17 B57C 6879 1863 DE55 8012 AB4D 6098 8826 6868 ----- End forwarded message ----- -- Andrew McNabb http://www.mcnabbs.org/andrew/ PGP Fingerprint: 8A17 B57C 6879 1863 DE55 8012 AB4D 6098 8826 6868
