The first thought that comes to mind when init goes into level 0 on its
own is that perhaps you have a power monitoring daemon that is somehow
convinced that you are about to experience a power outage. Doublecheck
your /etc/inittab and comment out all the lines that have "power" in them.
These were the lines with the word "power" in them:
linux:/etc# grep power inittab
# what to do when power fails/returns
pf::powerwait:/etc/init.d/powerfail start
pn::powerfailnow:/etc/init.d/powerfail now
#pn::powerfail:/etc/init.d/powerfail now
po::powerokwait:/etc/init.d/powerfail stop
sh:12345:powerfail:/sbin/shutdown -h now THE POWER IS FAILING
