Login to a command prompt and switch to runlevel 3. Then run sax2. Sax2 should come up with a text-mode (ncurses) based UI that will allow you to tweak your video card/monitor settings. You will be able to test a configuration and you'll see things in their full X11 beauty... Or you'll see a blank screen until you get things configured right.
