That would be a "soft" link, not a "software" link. They're all

Mac OS aliases (classic at least) are basically a combination of hard
and soft links. (Yet another example of useful filesystem features Mac
OS invented more than a decade ago that it's a shame no other
mainstream
OS has.) Windows shortcuts are basically symbolic links.

In regards to Mac OS aliases, do you know how they are handled in OS X?
