That's what wonderful USB enclosures are for.  Build your own external
optical drives, portable hard drives, etc.  5.25", 3.5" and 2.5".   Some
enclosures support USB2, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 all in the same
case.  Very handy and affordably priced too.
