We're supposedly both because we vote for leaders (democracy) who we give power to make decisions for us (republic). We started out high on the republic with checks and balances and low on the democracy voting for well informed electors to choose a president. That is unfortunately becoming obselete as we become a democratic oligarchy. The remnants of the republic are mostly things like the pledge of allegiance that make us feel really good while we look the other way as our leaders and judges continue to sell us to the highest bidder. The constitution is already hanging by threads.
