Unless you are a HAM licensed operator that configuration is illegal in 2.4GHz 
(antenna is not licensed for use with the system and you are not "qualified" to 
create your own and hook it up). 

You won't get caught though.

Like I said, my range doubled with a pair of the cardboard and tin
foil antennas on my Linksys WRT54Gs. It helps focus the
omnidirectional antennas into a somewhat directional signal. I would
highly suggest at least trying the free antenna route before spending
money.
