P.S. You really should have tested your cron job to make sure it was actually backing stuff up on to the drive when you first set it up. I am often amazed when people set up these elaborate backup systems and then never test them. You don't want the first data loss event to be the first test. That could have career damaging effects. :)

Yes, indeed. In my defense though, I did check it and it did appear to be working correctly. The cron was working correctly, and the files were being backed up. The problem where they were being backed up. When I plug it in, a directly show up in /media/ so I thought it was mounted. My backup was writing files to that directory. Unfortunately, that directory was on the same HD I was backing up from and not the external.
