It comes from the false idea that retailers, based on the heavy sales of
that one day, move from the "red" to the "black" (in accounting terms).
Is that a false idea? Many retailers do operate in the red the entire
year until that day at least (though it probably takes more than one
day of the season to actually get back in the black I guess).
