I have or have had working sendmail systems. Maybe I should just put
sendmail on all my Ubuntu machines.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's not go saying something we're going to regret
later. Friends don't let friends install sendmail.

So what on earth is wrong with sendmail? Sure, it has a bit of a high learning curve, but once learned, it not only has more features than the alternatives, but you can tune it to be faster than most of the others.

Like Unix, it's user friendly. It just chooses it's friends carefully.
