any reason you don't just put that in ~/.gvimrc?

Mainly because gvim sources .vimrc and I like to have one file that
works in both the terminal and the gui. It's annoying that macvim won't
source vimrc. Why is there a separate rc file for gvim anyway? I'd
prefer everything all in one place.

But that's the whole point. You use .vimrc for almost everything, except you put gvim-specific things in .gvimrc. I usually have only one or two lines in .gvimrc - font, maybe a different colorscheme, etc.

gvim (and macvim) do indeed source .vimrc first, then .gvimrc after. :help gvimrc

There's nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the
right keys at the right time and the instrument plays itself.
