McMansions are built because people want them; that doesn't mean they will want them in 20--30 years. If there was no consumer demand for them right now, they would not be built. Builders don't just go out and build any old type of building on a whim and then hope that someone will want it; they certainly don't consider building a house some kind of capital investment that will pay off in 20--30 years if they just hold onto it long enough for the consumer to come around and like it. Just like any product someone must value the McMansion more than their money or the exchange wouldn't happen.
