Yesterday I installed a couple of Western Digital Caviar Green drives.
Today I read the following article:

Sure enough, when I check my drives were unaligned. Thankfully LVM made
repartitioning relatively painless. I didn't think to get exact numbers,
but I can tell you based on personal experience as I watched a terabyte
of data do the two step, aligning the partitions made a noticeable
difference.
