Just to be clear: There is no CW requirement anymore at all, even for Extra 
class. I'm
of mixed feelings on them having removed it. I think a higher barrier to entry 
is kind
of a good thing... but at the same time, it meant I didn't have to polish up my
(non-existent) CW skill.

The reason it was removed was that the international treaty governing amateur 
radio
dropped the requirement, so the FCC decided they would drop it as well.
