I'd rather hire the better developer. Whichever one that is. In my experience, working with lots of people from both camps, getting a degree has very little to do with how good a developer you are. The attributes of a good developer generally mean that even without a degree, they're going to be working to increase their knowledge and learn the Right Way to do things.
