In response:

KDE is really smart about this. It remembers what screen I last had the
application open on when I was previously using that monitor configuration. So
when I have two screens, it uses the correct screen. When I have one screen,
everything appears there. When I go back to two screens, it uses the correct
screen again. It just seems to work.

Out of curiosity:

What graphics card do you have?

What resolution is your laptop?

How are you doing your twinview?

Is xrandr using a bunch of extra memory for unused graphics area on the
lower-resolution screen?

Are you hitting resolution limits?
