I'll try to explain the best I can.

In /etc/aliases, I have root paired with an email address external to the 
server. When I send mail to root from the command line, it is successfully sent 
to that external address. When my cron jobs fail, messages are sent to root. 
They messages are not sent to this external address. When I log in as root, I 
receive the "you have messages waiting" notification and I can view the 
messages via the command line mail client (mailx I believe).
