I tried this recently for some important data. All of the "local" providers try 
software solutions and then end up shipping the drive to California for 
hardware recovery.

I researched a number of places online and called and spoke with a few of them. 
Quoted costs were all between one and three thousand dollars. I ended up 
working with Drive Savers*. They were quick and communicated well, but they 
could not recover the data I needed so I ended up not needing to pay them.
