Why? I use telnet a lot. Granted nc might be a more powerful
replacement, but I very often telnet to a web server to see if its
responding. Or any number of other services to see if they are alive
like ssh, ldap, etc.
nc is more powerful in many respects, but with telnet you can more
easily tell (without additional options) whether your TCP session
connected or is still trying to connect.
