I have done well over the years with Lenovo T series laptops. I have
two T-61s and a T-520, all running Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 (jessie). Try
to get an IBM graphics controller. If the laptop has an Intel processor,
it will likely have an Intel WiFi chipset, which Linux supports well
enough.

I second the SSD suggestion.

That, and get lots of RAM. But you can reduce that requirement by using
XFCE or similar instead of GNOME, KDE or the like.
