I've been unable to get AlienBBC working until today. Finally I delved into it and discovered that it was the conversion option *-af resample=44100:0:1* causing me problems. By removing that I've got mplayer to decode the BBC streams, but I'm not sure if it's a viable solution. I find that after a few minutes, the audio becomes garbled and speeds up; could that be caused by the lack of resampling?
