2) If you normally stream mp3s only over a wireless network, then it could be a lack of slimserver->player bandwidth. In this case please try the solution that Michael proposed - enable streaming via mp3.
I experience the problem in wired mode, too. It's not a networking problem. But maybe mplayer's wav output is something strange and sb2 doesn't like it. I'm on mplayer pre6, btw.
3) If you are streaming as wav/flac and are using linux with a 2.4 kernel then there is a known problem which a handful of people have seen. If this is the case there are two fixes: upgrade to a 2.6 kernel or change a timer parameter in the server [post if you want to know which one!]
Ha! I'm on 2.4 :-). What do I have to change if I can't/don't want to update to 2.6?
