No, it is not. You'll get full Replaygain decoding by just adding that
slimserver-convert.conf file with the appropriate FLAC->FLAC or
FLAC->MP3 command lines inside. By default the server looks for the
file slimserver-convert.conf on startup for any user defined conversion
command line overrides (the defaults are in convert.conf).

If you want to change from album gain to track gain however, you'd have
to edit the slimserver-convert.conf file, change the command line flag
from "-apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=a" to
"-apply-replaygain-which-is-not-lossless=t" and restart the server for
that change to take effect. That's where this "Smart gain" mod really
helps out.
